Triptych – “Stairway to Heaven”

Triptych – “Stairway to Heaven”

For this sketch assignment, I drew inspiration from the darker triptychs on A Softer World. I wanted to go out of my comfort zone and create a fictional story that involved death. I thought about the one person’s death that would devastate me the most right now, and it was my mom. Thus in this story, my mom is in a coma, and I yearnfully wait for a response when I ask the question, “Mom, can you hear me?” I know there is no hope, and I make the decision of “pulling the plug” which means that my mom would come off of life support. I titled this piece “Stairway to Heaven” because I believe in the idea of the afterlife, and in the story, I would hope my dead mother’s soul would be able to ascend to heaven. I took the picture of the stairs on Emory Campus (the stairs used to go down to Barnes & Nobles). I also changed the picture to be black and white to give a more somber tone to the story.
